As hoped for last week, Bass fishing continues to improve. Water temperatures are rising (to a good level), there is more bait here, and the fish are bigger and more plentiful than last week. What more could anyone ask for? Blue skies some say….well they are here now, but our vote is for that early morning fish where you get to watch the sun rise and you have that feeling that you are alone out there on the water.

As far as size, lots of fish between 33 and 37 inches have been caught and the Eastern Rips are producing fish in excess of 40 inches. Capt Corey caught on Squaretail yesterday a 30 pounder. These fish are biting both plugs and flies… Big fish are out East and this next week is the time to go get them!

As far as nearer to home fishing, the harbor has also been fishing well and the Western rips, while inconsistent, have also been producing fish. For families who are simply looking to bend rods and some time on the water, the blue-fishing has been tremendous. We are catching the largest bluefish in years for this time of year…

Lastly, the Tuna Bite is on and the weather outlook looks promising to maintain the good conditions. In the last two weeks Shawn and Corey have spent a collective 5 days offshore, each of those five times produced hook-ups. The whales are as active either of us have ever seen them and both have had shots of Tuna on light tackle.

Long and short, the fishing is exactly where we want it to be. We hope to see you in the next few weeks to experience the best of what Nantucket has to offer in regards to fishing!

Capt. Corey Gammill and Capt. Shawn Bristow

Expect multiple casting opportunties into breaking tuns fish in the 60-75″ range. We have also been getting consitient bites on the troll with at least one if not more on every trip this year. As for the bass fishing, it is finally getting good, with some big fish being taken. Capt. Corey has had several fish over 30# in the past couple days on light tackle. With the water staying cold the bass fishing should continue to be great!

The Bass are continuing to swing around the southeast corner and are now being caught on the southeastern rips (Old Man and Pochick) and off of Sankaty Bluff. On the southeastern rips, Bass of some size are being caught mostly on swimmers, but also on larger Hogy’s and pencil poppers as well. The Sankaty fish are mostly being caught on wire line and 6 oz bucktails. Guys are catching the fish on spinning gear as well as they drop heavier bucktails and weighted fluke imitations and drift the Sankaty rips. Sankaty is also producing Black Sea Bass and Fluke as well. Anyone heading out to fish the eastern shore should also have bottom fishing gear on board as well!
Back to traditional “Spring Fishing” the harbor fishing continues to improve. It has not “lit up” yet as much as we have hoped, but there are tides still producing 10-15 fish for both shore and boat fishermen. Bait levels are improving and water temperatures are about “perfect” as they are nearing the high 50’s. The next week should be fun and Bass fishermen should be scurrying to spend EVERY potential free hour at their favorite holes or looking for new ones. Favorite lures continue to be Sluggo’s but Vision Eels and Sebille’s are out-producing Sluggos. As fishing is just getting going we would HIGHLY advise you to try new lures and to try new places.
A quick story for you, four years ago one of our favorite people to fish with was with us in the Fall and he asked us the question that “if he wanted to catch bass on Nantucket, when should he come.” Our response was “Make sure you are on this island on June 15th.” For the last three years Charlie Werner has caught at least 20+ Bass on every June 15th and he swears by this date.
In Short, get out and fish, try new and introduce someone new to the sport. It will not only make you smile to share it, but it will be more fun!

Tight Lines,

Two weeks ago the herring, a traditional herald of the striped bass, appeared in Hither Creek and Long Pond. As their numbers continued to build, anglers eagerly awaited the opening of Sesechacha and Hummock pond, which often pulls the Stripers into the shore.

What was fun, with the showing of the herring were the near shore sighting of whales! Remember, Whales (like fish) follow food and where there are heavy populations of Herring it is fun to see what else follows!

Earlier this week, anglers who had been waiting to see if the stripers would appear with the opening of Sesechacha got their wish as the pond was opened to the sea allowing the herring in with the stripers right behind. Small schoolies were found in the evening two nights later along the breakers created by the sand building up at the pond opening. With Hummock pond to be opened soon, their numbers should continue to build and larger fish should be seen in the next week or so.

It is important to remember though that while the first fish have been caught, there is usually a bit of lull in the first few weeks of May as the bigger body of the Striper population is still a ways from the island. This first flurry that we are seeing now should be enjoyed by all who are able to get to Nantucket’s shores, but be patient, as consistent numbers are still a few weeks away.

Remember though as you head out for your first cast of the season to put on some fresh line so you don’t throw away your new plugs! We’ll be in the shop all weekend and starting next week, we’ll be open Thursday through Sunday. If you need anything when we are not open, feel free to e-mail us and we will make sure to accommodate you.

By the way- Pond Fishing continues to be red-hot! Big pickerel are hitting nearly everything that passes in front of them as they gear up for the spawn. White Perch are mixed in among the herring and can be picked out along reed edges. Big yellow perch can be found patrolling deep edges. And big crappie are moving into shallow nesting grounds. Look for the fishing to be consistent during the day, with the fishing improving through the afternoon and evening. If you are on island for Daffodil Weekend or simply want to wet a line with a great chance to catch a fish, most of the ponds are loaded right now and we have everything you might need (including advice) at the shop.

Also, our tide charts are in for the season- so stop in to get one.

Cheers to the Stripers and Tight Lines to you,

Shawn has joined forces with Capt. Corey Gammill for the summer of 2011 and beyond. Capt. Corey brings the experience and reputation like none other. Capt. Shawn is very excited to be working with Capt. Corey on a daily basis. “He bring a winning attitude to water each and everyday”.

Corey’s fishing background is like so many who call Nantucket home. His first bluefish was caught from Great Point with a stiff wind in his face and rain beating down on him. He was six years old. It was a typical “bluefish blitz”, for which Great Point has become famous. To make that day even sweeter, Corey’s twin brother Cameron caught his first saltwater fish within minutes of his younger brother. Ever since that day, it would be an understatement to say that the love of fishing runs in Corey’s blood.

As Corey was growing up, he spent the winter thinking about Nantucket’s waters, only to be satisfied with local ponds and rivers. He also looked up to his brothers who spent their college age years working on charter boats. At eighteen, when “of age” Corey made his way to Nantucket to work as a mate on the Just Do It Too. For six years, Corey worked on various boats downtown.

In 2004, Corey was honored to be offered the opportunity to run boats for Capt. Tom Mleczko out of Madaket. From 2004 to 2010, Corey ran trips for Tom and has come to know not just the eastern waters of Nantucket, but also the western edges off the south shore and the shores of Tuckernuck, Muskeget, and The Vineyard.

On top of working with Shawn, Corey is also the proud owner of Bill Fisher Tackle since 2005, and also is the fishing Director for Great Harbor Yacht Club. While Corey is the first to tell you that he would rather be on the water than anywhere else, he enjoys teaching fishing at GHYC and gets his biggest thrill from hearing about others fishing success after seeking his advice in the shop.

While Corey is proud to call himself a fishing guide, he is more proud of his title of Teacher/Coach. In the “Off-Season” Corey has been a teacher since 2002. Corey currently teaches Math and Finance at St. Luke’s School in New Canaan, Ct and Corey is a passionate coach, coaching Soccer, Hockey and Lacrosse at both the varsity level as well as the youth level.

Those who have fished with Corey ALL speak about his ability to catch fish, whether it be inshore/offshore, Fly or Spin, but more importantly, people will talk about his passion and energy. This is perhaps Corey’s most impressive trait as he has an incredible ability to bring the best out of people in all situations. Whether he is in his classroom at St. Luke’s, or on the water with you, he brings an amazing amount of energy and passion to his work. Those who fish with him can’t help absorbing some of his enthusiasm.

With the ringing of bells well before dawn, an auctioneer launched into a rapid chant as rubber-boot wearing men signaled subtly with their hands.
The price for the 754-pound tuna beat the previous record set in 2001 when a 445-pound fish sold for 20.2 million yen, a spokesman for Tsukiji market said.
“It was an exceptionally large fish,” said the official, Yutaka Hasegawa. “But we were all surprised by the price.”
The massive tuna was bought and shared by the same duo that won the bidding for last year’s top fish: the owners of Kyubey, an upscale sushi restaurant in Tokyo’s Ginza district, and Itamae Sushi, a casual, Hong Kong-based chain.
‘I am relieved’
Reporters thronged Hong Kong entrepreneur Ricky Cheng after his big win, which reflects the growing popularity of sushi around the world, particularly in Asia.
“I was nervous when I arrived in Tokyo yesterday, but I am relieved now,” he said after the auction, which began shortly after 5 a.m. “Good tuna is really selling to people in Hong Kong and China, and this is a really good fish.”
The giant tuna, caught off the coast of northern Japan, was among 538 shipped in from around the world for Wednesday’s auction.
The record-setting price translates to a whopping 95,000 yen per kilogram, or about $526 per pound.
Japan is the world’s biggest consumer of seafood, with Japanese eating 80 percent of the Atlantic and Pacific bluefins caught. The two tuna species are the most sought-after by sushi lovers.
Fatty bluefin — called “o-toro” here — can sell for 2,000 yen ($24) per piece at high-end Tokyo sushi restaurants.
Japanese wholesalers, however, face growing calls for tighter fishing rules amid declining tuna stocks worldwide.
In November, the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas voted to cut the bluefin fishing quota in the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean from 13,500 to 12,900 metric tons annually — about a 4 percent reduction. It also agreed on measures to try to improve enforcement of quotas on bluefin.
The decision was strongly criticized by environmental groups, which hoped to see bluefin fishing slashed or suspended.

Sounds like a lot, the bonito have shown up inshore on the bar and our edges to the west. I want to congratulate Jack Williams for catching his first bonito ever, I’m sure there will be many more to come.
On the offshore front, we took a trip a trip south last week and managed to have luck catching bonito, mahi and yellowfin, we also raised a marlin, maybe a second one as well. Once this weather pushes through the fishing should be wide open. For those interested in the Bluefin bite, it is ON!!! Large fish being caught with some keepers in the mix as well. For those who do not know the Bluefin retention limits as of right now are 1 fish, between 27″ and 59″…
